Divine Office

Divine Office
Cycle of monastic liturgies sung at particular times each day. In the Benedictine rule there are eight, called "hours," thus the common expression "liturgy of the hours." The four major hours are matins (sometimes called vigils) during the night, lauds at daybreak, vespers in the evening, and compline before retiring. The four minor hours are prime, terce, sext, and none, named for the hours of daylight.
Other religious orders may observe a different pattern. In 1972 a reform of the divine office subsequent to the Second Vatican Council relaxed the regimen by substituting an Office of Readings for matins, eliminating prime, and offering a choice among terce, sext, and none.
